So far, the State Fund Agriculture has paid BGN 19.8 million (BGN 19,813,128) under the two schemes "School Fruit" and "School Milk" for the academic year 2020/2021. Of these, nearly BGN 16.5 million (BGN 16,521,512) are for deliveries made of fruits, vegetables, milk and dairy products, of fresh fruits and vegetables for schools and kindergartens. The remaining funds, amounting to BGN 542,188.62, are for reimbursement of expenses for honey delivery. The SFA also paid BGN 3,291,616 for the refund of Value Added Tax (VAT) to approved contractors.
The two schemes covered over 430 thousand children, who attend 3 329 schools and kindergartens throughout the country, in the 2020/2021 school year. For the 2020/2021 school year 121 applicants - sole traders, companies, manufacturers and educational institutions, were approved to deliver products.
The European School Milk and School Fruit Schemes are designed to instill lasting habits in children for the consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and quality dairy products, as well as to raise the awareness of children, students and their parents about the principles of healthy eating, but feeding children in schools is an activity to which the State Fund Agriculture is not directly related. The supplies under the School Fruit and School Milk schemes, which are funded by the EU and implemented by almost all Member States of the Community, benefit children in preschool and students from 1st to 4th grade including, who attend state, municipal and private schools and kindergartens.
3 366 schools with over 430 thousand children have applied for participation in the two schemes School Fruit and School Milk for the upcoming school year 2021/2022. Thus, European schemes will cover over 90% of all children and students in the country, who fall within the target group.
